This shows (in addition to my son’s smiling face) the new subdeck ski tow pole support lumber glassed in place. As in the original design, it consists of two layers of plywood, with the top piece being smaller than the bottom pieces. The edges are all cut with angles. Why? Because if you don’t, then you will be trying to get the fiberglass mat to make a 90 degree angle to get from the top of the support lumber to the underside of the deck. Wetted fiberglass mat does not want to make 90 degree bends so you angle the wood to create a “slope” for the mat to lay on as it transitions from the top of the board to the underside of the deck. Makes sense, doesn’t it? If you look close, you’ll note that all of the subdeck gunwale support beams were cut the same way (see the back deck support wood at the back of the photo? See the angle cut where it meets the deck?). This was also done on the original boards. This allows the glass to follow a shallow slope for good adhesion of the glass.
